Since it CSAM addiction seems to be the topic here tonight, I'm gonna reshare on of the first widely-viewed posts I made on Twitter:

Recently a young man, barely old enough to be considered a teenager, told me that he had been struggling with an addiction to CSEM for over a month. He told me it wasn't something he wanted in his life because he knew it was wrong, and that he wanted to quit, but he needed help.

He asked me if I had advice for talking to his parents about his unwanted attraction to young children, something that he knew he would need to do in order to seek therapy. This is not some creep on the internet, this is a child who made a mistake and is trying to make it right.

But now he's facing a terrible choice. If he tries to do the right thing, if he tells someone about his problem and tries to seek help, if he trusts the wrong person, it could destroy his life. But he knows the other option, keeping it a secret, is even worse.

The stigma against pedophilia doesn't protect children from abuse, but it harms innocent children with unwanted attractions. It tells teenagers who have done nothing wrong that they're monsters, sometimes driving them to the brink of suicide.

The people that perpetuate this stigma aren't protecting anyone, but rather forcing innocent children to face impossible decisions like this one every single day. This is not a game. This is not a joke. There are real lives that will be destroyed by the hatred they spread.

This is why I won't stop fighting until people like me are able to get the help we need. Until an innocent child is able to make the right choice without fearing it will ruin his life. Until children are safe from abuse of all forms. I will continue to fight for a better world.

Thought it's been over a year since I made that post, my views on the topic haven't changed. People who struggle with illegal content deserve support, not stigma and shame. Hurting people accomplishes nothing, and if the goal is truly to support survivors, then we need to focus on helping people who want to stop viewing do so, not ineffective law enforcement stings that will only ever target a small percentage of viewers. More people want help than we are capable of hurting, so why not focus on helping instead?
