Used Tesla Prices Skyrocket: Why Even Crashed Cars Sell for 1.7 Million Yen (USA)
With the recent surge in new vehicle sales, salvage yards are overflowing with crashed Teslas. According to an auction company, Teslas accounted for just 0.31% of reported salvage vehicle inventory in 2019, but that figure jumped to 2.34% in the first half of 2026.
The skyrocketing prices for wrecked Teslas are driven by rising global demand for EV components from repair shops and refurbishers. The most sought-after parts include battery modules, electric drive systems, and various high-tech electronic components; replacing these with brand-new parts during repairs incurs staggering costs.
Reports indicate that replacing a damaged or worn-out Tesla battery pack with a new one costs between $12,000 and $25,000 (approximately 1.9 million to 4 million yen), depending on the model and service location. Independent repair shops—those not directly operated or officially certified by the manufacturer—can reportedly reduce this cost to between $6,000 and $15,000 (approximately 950,000 to 2.4 million yen) by using refurbished battery packs salvaged from totaled Teslas. If a repair shop is able to replace only the specific battery cells or modules causing issues, the cost can be lowered further to around $1,500 to $6,000 (approximately 240,000 to 950,000 yen).
