As in the Anne books, Montgomery gives us an exclusively Protestant social circle, even though there would already have been many Catholics in Prince Edward Island. It reflects her own upbringing and culture, yet is often inadequate to the moral imaginations and needs of her characters. Earlier on, the Story Girl decided to do a few minor mortifications as penance for a wrong, and her Aunt Janet sees it only as nonsense. After this story toward the book’s end, we get the problem in plain terms. William Cowan, a misbehaving young man who reforms after an alleged encounter with the devil, changes his life for the better, but isn’t able to live more simply and piously with joy. “Uncle Roger says that if he had been a Roman Catholic he would have become a monk, but, as he was a Presbyterian, all he could do was turn into a crank.” !!
Would William Cowan have been a better Christian were the consecrated religious life an option? The Reformed Political Party winning in stronghold Urk makes for a particularly feel good piece of news. In spite of not being immune from contemporary crime and drug problems, Urk was one of the least vaxed locales in the Netherlands: “police were called out several times to deal with rioting youngsters during the lockdown. The local testing centre was also destroyed in an arson attack” !!
