Antifascist retelling of 90s Nazi violence + response
On 26 October 1991, grindcore/death metal legends and lifelong anti-fascist punks Bolt Thrower beat up violent, Sieg-Heiling Nazis at their gig in Pennsauken, New Jersey, while on tour with Immolation.
Members of a nearby Nazi biker gang had previously turned up at gigs and caused trouble by harassing people. That night would be no different:
Singer Karl Willets: "I remember throughout the support bands these nazi pricks had started to do that stupid arm streching routine a lot...I got on stage and told them to stop..(no suprise they didn't...but they'd had a warning....)"
A fan in the crowd recalled: "About a half hour into the set, a circle pit opened up, but it wasn't for moshing. The skins were brutally beating and kicking a guy who was lying on the floor in the fetal position, trying to protect himself from the boots.
A tall, skinny skinhead ran off to the back of the club, and when he came back, he had a baseball bat, which he used to pound this poor guy's head into mush. The crowd erupted into a proper riot. Bolt Thrower's singer, Karl, jumped into the crowd to pound on skinheads, god bless him."
"I looked out the corner of my eye to see this huge Neanderthal coming right at me, with Adolf Hitler tattooed on his chest- at this point our Tour Manager intervened with the German slugger!
I saw the nazi monster collapse to the floor with blood pissing out of his head, the backswing to the bat almost killed one of the skinhead kids whom must have been about 12.
The place descended into chaos, the security guards were related to the skinheads, it could have got bad... We loaded our gear out superquick thanks to a more together Immolation and high-tailed it out of there. As we left, Baz remembered we left the baseball bat in the venue, he went back in to retrieve it just as the skinheads returned to the venue for vengeance... I have never seen a man move so quick through a melee of flailing limbs!
We drove off and we then thought that we were being followed by carloads of nazis after our blood, so we pulled over to confront them, yelling as we approached the stopped vehicles, until we realised it was some fans just making sure we got away ok..."
20 years later Journalist Kez Whelan concluded: "As you’d expect from anyone with at least a rudimentary grasp of history too, Bolt Thrower have been defiantly anti-fascist since day one. In stark contrast to the apathetic “apolitical” leanings of many war obsessed metal bands, Bolt Thrower’s principled ethics have seen them get into some scraps over the years"
"As vital as Bolt Thrower are to the fabric of death metal, it’s stories like this that demonstrate the punk mentality that has always underpinned the band."

Retching – Charming the Decomposed Review
By Saunders
Part of the appeal of my long-standing relationship with death metal is the sheer diversity of the genre and its many sub-genres. There is something for all moods. So while stylistic preferences remain, most forms of death I can happily jam with, whether it be old school primitive clubbings, tech shredding, gnarled dissonance, emotive melodeath, brutal slam, or successful forays of doom, blackened and prog influences into deathly frameworks. But in the end, it’s the genre’s simplified, core values and slimy, grimy atmospheres that warm the heart. Throwing their hats in the old school death revivalist ring, relative newcomers Retching explode out the rusty graveyard gates with a no-nonsense, pretension-free blast of old school death. Seeking to add their own spin and identity to separate themselves from the horde of old school aficionados, while leaving reinvention for other folks, the Rhode Island duo unleash debut, Charming the Decomposed. Let us explore whether Retching possess the songwriting smarts and tools of destruction to make an impact outside of aping the genre’s proud past.
Thirty-two minutes is all it takes for Retching to deliver eight slashing cuts of riff-driven, blasty, gore-soaked death, American-style. Charming the Decomposed is an old school brawler with a mean streak, chock to breaking point with parasitic grooves, gut-busting riffs, brutal percussive assaults, and appropriately grisly, brutal vocal eruptions. All that said, Charming the Decomposed doesn’t take itself too seriously, loading the rabid, bloodied collection with a variety of part goofy, part unsettling samples, adding to the album atmosphere, even if they are a little overdone at times (see bludgeoning opener “Moonlight Perversions/Gorging on Ecstasy”). Otherwise, efficient, high-energy cuts are the order of the day, drawing influence from the esteemed likes of early Exhumed, Mortician, Carcass and Cannibal Corpse.
“Shower Curtain Silhouette” builds from a rugged, grinding base, ratcheting up tension before exploding into speedy, punk-infused rampages, stomping verses, and skillfully fluctuating tempo shifts. The deceptive songwriting diversity poking through the muck and feral abuse adds a layer of intrigue to otherwise more traditional, blunt force beatings, amid a couple of less impactful tunes. Another of the album’s stronger examples, “Septic Entombment,” features a creative arrangement, allowing breathing space for the meaty, yet wickedly infectious riffs and bouncing grooves to ride shotgun with aggressive, blast-riddled surges. Retching operates effectively in high-speed savagery, yet the writing tends to appeal most when mixed with slower, malevolent tempos, lending a doomy, leaden weight to proceedings, such as the tormenting melodies and ominous vibes emanating from “Fetid Abattoir.”
Energy rarely drops, as brutality and raw-boned explosions of speed and blast-riddled mayhem ensue. Retching wisely integrate structural and tempo variety, coupled with razor-fine slivers of melody and raucous, crunchy riffs to stave off monotony and lend the album an infectiously headbangable streak. Along with the aforementioned tunes, this is further highlighted on the brooding, ominous swagger of ‘Vulgar Celluloid Trophy”. The anonymous duo of Latex (drums, vox) and Mondo (guitars) forge a powerhouse combo, perfectly suited to the lean, mean, and cutthroat nature of the album’s tight construction. Latex whips together a punchy, inventive performance behind the kit, proving adept at deploying slower, groovier rhythms and finesse to go with the rip-snorting blasts and thrashy tempos. His serviceable vocals get the job done, adding a gritty, guttural edge. Meanwhile, partner in crime Mondo serves up an unhealthy dose of meaty, genuinely catchy riffs, which, if maintained consistently across the album, may have elevated a solid experience into something more substantial. Still, there is some excellent axework and riffs to sink into.
Retching’s impressively no-nonsense debut won’t challenge the upper tier of death metal albums in 2025 or threaten many year-end lists. But what it does, it does well, with a no-fuss, belligerent charm that is easy to like. While there is little fat or unnecessary bloat to be found, the songwriting has room for improvement to live up to the quality of the album’s stronger cuts and create a more consistent, compelling listen. However, signs are bright and the potential promising for Retching to build something more formidable down the track.

Québec has long been a region synonymous with uncompromising death metal, with stacks of excellent bands bleeding from its fertile cemetery grounds. Débutants Décryptal emerge from said land, unveiling their first full-length entitled Simulacre after just one prior demo. This release arrives with the promise of a sound steeped in French Canada’s murky traditions, plundering tombs and raiding caverns alike. But in a scene so replete with bands treading the same territory, is Simulacre able to carve out its own grave?
Simulacre fits neatly – if powerfully – into the cavernous style of death metal, exemplifying the new school of the old school. In this way, Décryptal strongly recall Phrenelith. Everything about the album is bruising. From the burly guitar grooves to the battering drums, to the guttural growls, to the meaty production, it feels like proper death metal. It prioritizes fat rhythms above shredding melodies, with the chunky guitars, bass, and drums offering a thunderous accompaniment to everything that happens. And even if the riffs and performances already conveyed the sense of a pungent vaulted cave system, the production wraps all this into something pitch-black and haunting. I love how the rounded drums, thumping bass, and jagged guitar edges create a void of hope.
Besides the album’s overall aesthetic and the atmospheric production, it’s hard to argue that Simulacre’s strongest quality isn’t its guitar leads. The release is stuffed full of undeniable riffs. My highlight is the passage from 3:20 on “Horde d’Invertébrés” or “Dendrites.” I’m unclear which, because these two tracks are the same on my review copy, leaving me to assume that there’s also a corresponding track missing. In either case, the riff checks every box I want a death metal riff to check: groovy, meaty, driving, and headbangable. The guy who wrote it deserves to dine out on its quality for a substantial period. Likewise, the lead that commences at 1:10 on “Flétrissement” offers a compelling blend of bludgeoning brutality and scything sharpness. Though Décryptal like to smash more than they like to slice, they’re capable of swapping their hammers for knives when the situation demands it. And while things never descend into Incantation death/doom territory, the band also enjoys slowing the tempo into passages with thick, doomy leads (“Zisurru,” for example).
You may question where Simulacre falters. The songs are consistently good, but also feel like they are constituted from various great riffs haphazardly arranged. Décryptal don’t sound as if they were especially focused on meaningful, coherent song construction. You can hit play from anywhere throughout and immediately have fun, but you could also switch around many passages without feeling like much has changed. This undermines the album as a unique art form, intended as a deliberate arrangement of songs in a particular order. This is compounded by the songwriting, which is robust but predictable. There are no surprises here as everything is exactly what you expect it to be. Variety, or moments of true inspiration, are thin on the ground. Part of this sense that there’s little to truly stand out is that the shredding guitar solos are relatively buried compared with the punchy rhythms. I understand that the band is plumping for a thick, murky tone, but louder solos would help to break up the songs if they were mixed higher.
Dissecting Simulacre exposes a Décryptal that’s already brushing up against the bands that influence them; though it may not be as innovative or exciting as those bands once were, it’s a remarkably good execution of cavern-core death metal. While stylistically brutal, there’s no shortage of technicality; it’s just that the band rightly prioritizes power above showmanship. Simulacre isn’t perfect, but could be the start of a Very Good Thing.

This week's #ThursDeath is a killer new find, Hyvinkää, Uusimaa Finland's DEATHGOAT and their fucking EXCELLENT new LP 'Dragged Into Realms Below' that Xtreem just put out. This thing is a churning, raging, roaring mass of filthy death metal. Riffs, solos, it's got it all. Finnish death metal doesn't fuck around, man. And there's often a lot of gems via Xtreem. A surprising contender this year and REALLY worth a listen.
