In response to being confronted with evidence of corruption in the video games journalism industry, the journos conspired (their secret mailing lists were leaked) to create the narrative that all of the accusations of corruption were by cis white men who just hate women and minorities, and that GamerGate is nothing more than misogyny.

#NotYourShield was to disprove this, and was many women and minorities in gaming saying "we are not your shield", as in "don't use our identity as a shield to protect your corruption".

The KnowYourMeme article is corrupted in the same way that politics-related Wikipedia articles are corrupted, to fit the narrative.
