This week's donation went to the MX Linux project. It's a Linux distro based off Debian which gives the user a choice in init system between Sysvinit and SystemD as both are installed. You can download your choice of editions which use XFCE, KDE or Fluxbox as well as install other desktop environments after install. It can also easily be used with the libre kernel if one wanted to if you follow the instructions at FSFLA and uses the liquorix kernel by default. It uses the Ext file system by default. The latest release is called Libretto which is based off Debian 12 but has several enhancements and newer versions of certain packages if you use the "ahs" version. Overall it is a great option if one wants a distro giving them more freedom of choice.

This week's donation went to the Devuan project. It's a Linux distro based off Debian which not only doesn't use SystemD but during install gives the user a choice between SysVinit, Runnit, and OpenRC. If you use the netinstaller option you also get a choice of desktop environments during install including XFCE, Cinnamon, Gnome, KDE, LXDE, LXQT and Mate. It can also easily be used with the libre kernel if one wanted to if you follow the instructions at FSFLA. It uses the Ext file system by default. The latest release is called Daedalus which is based off Debian 12 but you can install Excalibur which is based off Debian testing if one needed newer packages. Overall it is a great option if one wants a distro giving them more freedom of choice during install.

I Hate Systemd!
ihatesystemd.comAfter systemd?
Why after systemd?
We think that even though many distros have adopted systemd, the general design or motivation of the project is not good and will lead to more problems than it solves.
We anticipate that systemd is currently in fashion, however many of us have seen software rising and falling, especially if it was ill designed (sendmail anyone?).
In that sense we are planning for the time when distros and users are beginning to migrate away from systemd.
No systemd
If this is the solution, I want my problem back.
This website tries to become a collection of resources pointing out reasons against systemd and what alternatives are available.
systemd is the best example of Suck.
There is a menace which is spreading like a disease throughout the Linux world, it is called systemd.
