I spent the last few days checking out Steam's NextFest, and I played (or tried to play) 22 demos. Only one of them failed to launch (on Garuda Linux, which is Arch based). Managed to complete almost all of the rest (had a couple control issues that might be related to Linux drivers/Gulikit controller). So here's a list of the ones I think are worth checking out:

For my next #Steam #NextFest demo, there's this cute detective game featuring a goat girl named Diana who volunteers to help solve a mysterious theft after her vespa breaks down in the sunny, romantic seaside village of Borgo Marina.

The demo is pretty limited in scope but gives you a taste of what it's like to explore the town, talk to other charming animal characters, play minigames, and finally solve a mystery. (Not rewrite history.)

Another Steam #NextFest demo that I'm actually playing in a timely manner.

This one's about a little robot that needs to solve environmental puzzles to get out of some sort of underground facility, and quickly forms a team with a friendly magnet named Magnus.

Fun, and some of the puzzles later on in the demo do get a bit tricky and ask you to think a few steps ahead.

I'm glad that Kitsune Tails is approaching release. Had a good time playing the Steam's #NextFest demo this evening.

The game's immensely cute with its foxgirls and sometimes surprisingly detailed cutscenes, but the physics did take a while to get used to.

(I wonder how my #SMB3 muscle memory is if I were to replay that game now.)

The #NextFest demo for "Duck Detective: The Secret Salami" by a small #Berlin based studio with the cute name #HappyBroccoli is *very* short – and still won me over with its superb (!) voice acting and lovely art style. If you have only 10 minutes to spare, make it this tiny deduc(k)tion game - you won't regret it, promised!

My third #NextFest recommendation is #Diceomancer, a roguelike deckbuilder à la #SlayTheSpire - but with a very special twist: You can change *any* number on the screen by rolling a dice. Reroll the enemies HP. Or your own. Or the number of cards in your deck. Or in your discard pile. Or the coins you own. The mana you have. You get the idea... Very cool concept! Also, I love the hand drawn art style. :)

Another demo that really positively surprised me was #Deviator. Visually, it looks a little *too* much like #HollowKnight, and I'm sure this will be a turnoff to some. That being said, it actually plays a lot more like #Sekiro, relying heavily on perfectly timed blocks and counter-attacks. And not only is that still a very underexplored frontier in the #SoulsLike genre as a whole, it's also *really* well executed here! Recommended!

#NextFest is almost over, so if you haven't yet, please make sure you play the demo for "Children of the Sun" – it's fantastic! At its core is a #puzzle about sniping all the enemies in a level with a single (!) bullet. Scout the level, then shoot and *become* the bullet. After each hit, you get to redirect it once while the enemies move in slow motion. Highscores, combos and trick shots to keep you iterating included. :)

#SteamSummerSale2023 haul part 2

I tried the demo for #TheEternalCylinder in last year's autumn #NextFest and loved the visuals, creatures, and overall unique environment. I might have to lower the graphics to medium when I play based on what my OC can handle, but I'm looking forward to it.

#Melatonin is a rhythm-based game that looks dreamy and charming, and #PlanetCoaster was also on my wishlist for a while. I heard you can even "ride" the rides with a first-person view! #videogames
