Hi #Devconf_CZ! Bye @devconf_cz ! Two long days that went by in a flash. Thanks everyone for all the chats, feedback, learning, and fun! #Brno #RedHat #opensource #definefuture

#FOSS is all about options:
- I chose not to use #RedHat systems 28 years ago.
- I chose not te use #GNOME 15 years ago
- I chose not to use #SystemD 6 years ago.
- I choose to accelerate the migration of all the #Linux based systems I can to #BSD systems because:
- I choose to keep up with the #UNIX way
- I choose to use stable systems which don't change for the sake of change
- I choose to be part of healthier communities, that don't promote monoculture or fall so easily into arrogance

yesterday in #fedora qa:
* lots of meetings in #redhat brno office. Also checked into the IBM brainwashing machine and updated my programming. mmm, warm toasty brain rays
* more running #openqa tests on the #python 3.14 rebuild for #rawhide , eventually we decided to merge it
* improved how we figure out what packages are 'in' the side tag when testing a side tag in openQA - pagure.io/fedora-qa/os-autoins , pagure.io/fedora-qa/os-autoins

... and do not be confused here - Wayland is THE #RedHat baby - #RedHat is THE company that kills the X11 since years.

To name it in 'simple' manners #RedHat is THE #Wormtongue for #Theoden king.

... and this is time when everyone is free from that bullshit.

Long live Xlibre!

Fedora Project

Did you use Fedora 40 at one point? Perhaps you didn't know, but that's the version of Fedora that went on to become Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10!

And RHEL 10 is what you can keep on counting on for 10 years.

Maybe that's too long to not upgrade on your laptop, but it's great for businesses who need reliability and flexibility for their infrastructure.

In the lead up to Flock we want to thank the sponsors who fund our annual contributor conference!

Red Hat is the foundational partner for the Fedora Project. We started through them and they have been stewards of Fedora Linux for over 20 years. We're grateful for Red Hat's contributions to Fedora specifically and open source at large!

AlmaLinux 10 follows RHEL 10!

Following the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, AlmaLinux have followed the lead by releasing the newer version based on that version of RHEL, called AlmaLinux 10 “Purple Lion.” It utilizes the infrastructure of Red Hat Enterprise Linux to give you a popular community Linux OS alternative. Now, AlmaLinux is more secure and powerful with the latest packages on the way.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 requires your processor to be at the x86_64-v3 baseline, but AlmaLinux 10 doesn’t seem to require this baseline. Those who have an old PC with at least an x86_64-v2 processor can use AlmaLinux 10.

AlmaLinux 10 is fully compatible with RHEL 10, which is good news. Additionally, ARM computers can now enjoy UEFI Secure Boot, which makes your computer more secure. You can still use SPICE in this version of AlmaLinux, despite RHEL 9 deprecating it.

For developers, you can now use AlmaLinux 10 with frame pointers to improve your software development experience, especially when it comes to application debugging and diagnosis. You can now profile the application performance in real time to find performance bottlenecks in any workload.

More devices have been supported in AlmaLinux 10, which went unsupported in RHEL 10. Anyone with such devices can now use this version of AlmaLinux to continue using those devices.

Are you excited for AlmaLinux 10? Download it now!

This week in #Linux was crazy! I went to the #RedHat Summit and walking through airports, a convention center, and the streets of Boston ... my feet hurt but I'm powering through to bring you the next episode! TWIL 312 has been recorded, now time to edit. #onthegrind #hustle

I know that @centos Stream tracks just ahead of RHEL. Is anyone running this on their server? I'm thinking about moving away from Debian on the server and wondering if @almalinux would be a better choice or, maybe, take advantage of the RH Developer Program and install RHEL? I've not worked with servers in a while (many years) so this will be a good learning experience.

Red Hat announces RHEL 10.

However, they should fire the AI that's writing their press releases. That post reads like nothing but a bunch of buzzwords.

> "Durable foundation for IT innovation fuels more intelligent hybrid cloud operations with AI-powered Linux management"

WTF does that even mean?

Okay, so, applying to open positions within Red Hat again. I don't know why I keep abusing myself like this. I've been trying for more than 15 years to get into Red Hat and have failed (obviously). And since I've been unemployed for more than a year, I'm now at the "nothing to lose" phase, so may as well give it another try. And at the age of 58, when do I finally just give up on the idea?

I'm still running Debian on my small home server (that may change soon) but I have fully embraced @fedora on the desktop. Both my laptop and desktop are running the latest Fedora and have been for about 3 months. I may go with CentOS on the server soon. Just not sure how much I really want to tackle that project right now.

Why the change? Pretty simple: Community. The Fedora community is nothing short of awesome, and in the 30+ years that I've been running Linux, I've always said that community in an open source project is the most important part of the project.

UPDATE:

I feel that I need to add a bit more context to this post. A few people have commented asking what I think is wrong with Debian and why the change. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Debian. It's an awesome Linux distribution with a great community. I've been running Linux for more than 30 years and the past 15 years, Debian has been running my hardware. I just want to try something new for a while. I still have Debian running on my server and another desktop that I do a lot of testing on. I will never completely stop using Debian.
