After tracking down a dvd rip of the film on 1337x, I decided I'd view "Turtles Forever" as a way to unwind before bed. I was looking forward to the clashing of different styles, as the often silly 89 TMNT would be meeting the late 90s angular edge-infused gang from 2003, and both of those groups would even go into the monochromatic world of the original TMNT black and white comics.

I have to say that I found the end result to be less than satisfying. Sometimes when you have too many protagonists or antagonists it can be hard to have any one of them be the focus (film or anime adaptations of fighting games often have the same problem) . As this was primarily supposed to be an '03 production, their team got a lot of attention and Utrom Shredder had the chance to see what he could make using the '89 world's Technodrome. He set to work like an efficiency expert, eliminating ineffective strategies while repurposing the Foot Soldier foundry to make far more lethal robots.

Inmo the '89 villains got the short end of the stick, leaving OG Shredder and Krang to not do much while Utrom Shredder walked off with much of their tech. On a similar note, the '03 turtles repeatedly commented on their '89 counterparts excessive joking and fourth wall-breaking habits. To me, it felt like a comedian that went a tad too far and made their comic roast come off like an angry tirade.

The high point was the journey to the so-called Turtle Prime world and the team up between all three Turtle groups (and Karai) to defeat Utrom Shredder and restore their respective realities. This ended with a cut to Eastman and Laird finishing up work on one of the black and white Turtle comics before they took a lunch break to eat pizza.

So I saw it. But did I like it? Not that much, honestly. The plot needed more time in the oven and the writers should have also found a better balance between the teams. The lack of the original voice cast from the '89 cartoon was also noticeable. As this was a special movie made to celebrate the Turtles' 25th anniversary, I think they should have brought back the original VA team or paid soundalike voice actors to try to mimic the originals.

As far as TMNT crossover films go, "Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is far superior to this entry in the franchise. That had the advantage of a writing team trying to find out ways for the characters to play off one another and how the heroes would react to the clash of world styles and villains.

Rating: C . I think they could have done more with this crossover idea and it's a shame it wasn't realized correctly. It wasn't terrible (which is why I didn't assign a D or E) but you can skip this one.

Without turning this into my blog, the past few months have been rough for me on a personal level. So when insomnia kicks in and I can't go back to sleep, I welcome a movie that'll give me a slice of escapism that lasts for between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Today, after waking up at 0340 hours, I brewed coffee, put it in my Buc-ee's tumbler, and then loaded up Kodi and played a copy of TMNT: Out of the Shadows.

I was an 80s kid and TMNT was a fun cartoon that I still have fond memories of today.
TMNT: Out of the Shadows, despite following one of the weakest TMNT movies, was actually
rather good as an entry in TMNT. As far as I'm concerned, nothing's going to top the 1990 movie but this one was also satisfying. James Rolfe, the Angry Videogame Nerd, once said that as a child he dreamed of what the third live-action TMNT movie was going to be. In his imagination, it would have Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, and the Technodrome. It'd be on an epic scale.

This is that movie, mutant warthogs and all, that we Turtles fans dreamed of as kids. It doesn't shy away from embracing its cartoon and comic book origins, instead fully embracing them to the betterment of the film. The Foot clan act and dress like ninjas instead of terrorists as they did in the preceding entry. April behaves like an actual investigative reporter this time. The Turtles also have some moments when they have to sneak around and do stealth infiltration like ninjas. There was some character growth not only for each of the Turtles as individuals but also as a team and as family. The end credits had a remix of the cartoon's opening. For this movie's two hour runtime, I felt the same way I did as a kid watching what was essentially a special ep of the original cartoon with a hugely inflated budget.

I'm kind of surprised that they set this up as the second Bayturtles movie because I think they should have gone with this first. The bad impression from the first Bayturtles film probably worked to the detriment of this one's box office earnings.

On a personal note, if there is to be another Turtles live-action film, I'd much rather they use actors in suits and then have CGI used for touch-up work (hiding seams in the suits, allowing the character to appear to breathe, subtle facial movements, etc.) That would be easier for us to take in than CGI that still doesn't look quite real.

As a regular action movie, this is about a midrange B. For Turtle fans, it jumps over a B+ to land in the A- range.
