If the free market worked to benefit consumers and if companies always acted in the best interests of the consumer and if corporations weren't positively reenforced to consistent malevolent, anti-social behavior then we wouldn't need government regulations to force market entities to stop doing shitty things and good things wouldn't solely exist within the places where these regulations existed.

The freer the market the freer the people, eh? Idk why some people think allowing corpos to do whatever they want will somehow benefit them.

@dushman @adiz as in, just buy an Android or some other mobile device if you don’t want the stuff an iPhone offers

I can guarantee you that the vast majority of iPhone users don’t care about what prompted this regulation, most of the annoyance at Apple is coming from people who don’t use their stuff and won’t even after this

It’s virtue signalling

@Arcana@akko.disqordia.space @adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl
Oh yeah I'll agree on that part, you can get something better instead. Though this regulation is a good idea imo, same as forcing them to adopt usb c.

@Arcana@akko.disqordia.space @adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl
Say you get handed one down from a friend who got a new phone. You'll be able to install software not approved by crapple.

@dushman @Arcana @adiz sure, but having to support random software will make the vertical integration less pervasive which is the main thing people like about apple products

you wouldn't demand an FSF-approved linux distro officially support running Microsoft Edge to comply with regulations, why whould you demand an Apple phone support that either?

@nyoom@akko.disqordia.space @Arcana@akko.disqordia.space @adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl
I think all companies should be forced by law to make their devices have the capability of installing unofficial software by the user
:gigachad:

@dushman @nyoom @adiz they can choose this, they can buy a different device

Why do you want to harm the companies making alternatives?

@Arcana@akko.disqordia.space @nyoom@akko.disqordia.space @adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl
The alternatives are few and far between and I don't see how forcing them into pro consumer practices is a bad thing in any way. Tim cook can cry about it. Being able to install coreboot on any mobo would be based as fuck, that's why I also mentioned firmware.

@dushman @nyoom @adiz the alternatives aren’t few and far between though, there’s a ton of stuff out there if you want those options

Also, it’s a phone lmao, the number of people who want to install coreboot on their portal telephone is probably less than 0.001% of the global population

Why don’t people start a company selling the product they want to see rather than begging government to change things people already like?

@Arcana@akko.disqordia.space @nyoom@akko.disqordia.space @adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl

Why don’t people start a company selling the product they want to see rather than begging government to change things people already like?

Ah yes lemme just build an advanced chip fab from nothing for open source hardware. Breaking into the tech market is not easy to put it lightly.

@dushman @nyoom @adiz this is why investment exists, make the case that this is a genuinely lucrative market that the masses are begging for and you’ll get the money

Also do you really need your own chips to do what this regulation achieves lmao
@Arcana @nyoom @dushman @adiz DMA? No. Fully libre and documented hardware? Yeah, probably.
@allison @nyoom @dushman @adiz the number of people who choose to use Apple products and care about “fully libre and documented hardware” on them is probably in the 10s if that
@Arcana @nyoom @dushman @adiz It's a lot more than you think. There was actually a very profitable white labeling business back in the PowerPC days which sold Power Macs loaded with Yellow Dog Linux out of the factory (with Apple's blessing) and the amount of people I've encountered who have bought ARM Macs *specifically* to run Asahi is also quite substantial. Even within the macOS and iOS ecosystems, I see very substantial support for FOSS and the only reason it isn't more prevalent in the latter is because of DRM needlessly retarding it.
@allison @nyoom @dushman @adiz Okay, so a business formed offering that, great, that’s how it should be done

Also I’m guessing the amount of people is below 100,000, maybe even 10,000

People who want things should create things
@Arcana @nyoom @dushman @adiz Economies of scale would tend to disagree. Here's a question for you: what do you think of the Carterfone decision?
@allison @nyoom @dushman @adiz hadn’t heard of it before but it’s an example of regulation on top of other regulation

They opened something up that was closed due to legal mechanisms in the first place
@Arcana @nyoom @dushman @adiz ... that was closed on the behalf of a private company which had achieved a natural monopoly even before government entered the picture
@allison @nyoom @dushman @adiz Yes it was, closed on behalf of the private company

Shouldn’t have been, government should have stayed out of it
@Arcana @nyoom @dushman @adiz What I'm saying is that the practical effect would have been the same either way, what were you going to do, not have telephone service after AT&T wrung you dry for interoperating with their network in a way they didn't like? In a lot of ways I basically see Apple as a modern day AT&T in terms of the absolute influence they have in their market and their ability to privately set the terms that everyone else has to abide by or else risk being unpersoned from society at large (eventually, we're not quite there yet but by 2030 assuming nothing happens I think we will be). While I disagree with the specifics of the implementation (it's tortured in a way only EU committee legislation can be) the DMA did not spring from a vacuum.
@allison @nyoom @dushman @adiz if they were truly a market monopoly unsupported by state regulation then they were clearly doing something right that people wanted
@Arcana @nyoom @dushman @adiz That "something right" being a walled garden chat network overlaid over the nominal industry standard which has guards against full interoperability with non-Apple devices *by design* and which essentially brands anyone who doesn't use it as a stone cold incel. If iMessage didn't exist, I guarantee you not half the people who use iPhones now in the states would use them. Whatever genuine advantages Apple devices may or may not have pale in comparison to this.
@allison @Arcana @dushman @adiz if I've never even had anyone mention iMessage despite having mostly been aroud mac users my whole life it's clearly not nearly as important as you think
@nyoom @Arcana @dushman @adiz You're in an ultra academic ultra liberal East Coast bubble
@allison @nyoom @dushman @adiz I’ve never heard it mentioned either, and I use an iPhone too and hadn’t heard of iMessage
@MercurialBlack @nyoom @dushman @aceattorneybot @allison @adiz Sorry, I haven’t received any render instructions and can’t complete this request
