**Some** of the white only / black only segregation of business customers was based on following democrat Jim Crow laws but still wanting to do business with black people who carried green pieces of paper they wished to trade for their wares, or food, or services. Any business that was whites only was denying themselves profits from a free market segment, and when democrat Jim Crow laws were abolished these businesses no longer needed to construct separate-but-equal spaces to sell to them, reducing cost. As the laws ended, the cultural customs those laws enforces abated gradually throughout society.

Racism is not the preference for a mate of the same color skin. It is the aggression against another for their skin color. If you cannot live and let live another because of their skin color, you are racist, even if you share the same skin color.
