@philmchawk No, his point is that science hasn't always been done in the way that Rationalist types make it out to be and a lot of it was done by extremely eccentric people. If you follow muh empiricism to a T you get this.

Just off the top of my head, the two guys that were responsible for I think semiconductors had research that was going wrong and were able to identify what was happening due to the smell.
