I'm not particularly shocked to be honest. Don't know how active they are these days, but whispers have it that Gypsies here had something similar going. There was a time when you'd see a lot of beggars with physical malformations in my country. Some of the worst I've witnessed consisted of feet literally being twisted the wrong way around.
