@projectmirai39 You can ctrl-shift-i to see a list of the connections it makes. It's also open source so people look at it from the source. It doesn't steal any metadata
When I ctrl-r my synapse/element instance it only makes a single connection outside of my sever to https://vector.im/_matrix/identity/api/v1 without any actual data in it. I think it's the identity server thing, and you can turn it off
It's not spoopy at all. Tech illiterates just find spread rumours because there is actually a company behind this. The way they make money is by offering to host instances for companies and individuals. That's it
@billiam @projectmirai39 I host both. XMPP might be technically better or "less bloat" or whatever the fuck Luke thinks but it's nowhere near as useable. Dino being the best desktop client for it says a lot
I'd consider XMPP more comparable to Tox or something as is
