Apocalypto (2006)
A very weird movie, which is better than a boring movie, but not necessarily a good movie.
It's the first Mel Gibson movie I've ever seen, and the only other movies I know him from from is acting in The Highlander and The Passion of the Christ (I've seen neither). I know the latter is basically torture porn, and I'm guessing that's what Mel Gibson likes, because this is by far one of the goriest movies I've ever seen (especially for a more modern film that isn't grindhouse-y). It's also the most animal violence I've ever seen in a movie, period.
It's very fast paced, sort of like Mad Max Fury Road. It starts off, goes fast, hits a half-way point, then starts going fast again.
The main flaw is that it's all in a fake Aztec language (I think) which sounds really weird. None of the characters have names that are memorable (they're all shit like 'Jaguar Paw'). It's not obvious who the main character is, you don't really get a lot of development for them. Everyone is sort of nasty and brutish and when the quality of life is so fucking low you can only feel like everyone is better off dead. It's basically monkeys in a zoo banging rocks against each other. How am I to pick a favorite monkey and root for him against the other violent chimps?
Has a weird ending that I still somehow predicted about a minute before its reveal but it adds nothing to the film except giving its title a second meaning.
Not a very memorable movie. Watch it if you love gorey films.
