The difference between libertarianism and socialism is that libertarians will tolerate the existence of a socialist community, but socialists can't tolerate a libertarian community.

Liberty becomes tyranny unless throttled by some universally agreed upon limitations and safety nets. Just look at what the U.S. Gov does with all their liberty... they destroy the liberty of others.
Socialists just want more equity and no poverty. Libertarians are essential to avoiding another Stalin regime though, as Communism with a top on down power structure will always lead to misery and abuse of power.
Socialism should be free, consensual, and from the people. Otherwise it's just state capitalism with some crappy ineffective welfare thrown in.
