Brian Kolfage supported President Donald Trump’s proposal for a wall on the the U.S.-Mexico border. He was frustrated that Congress still refused to fund the wall (as I write this, we’re in the early hours of “government shutdown” theatrics over that very argument).

Unlike most Americans, Kolfage did something above and beyond voting and complaining to assuage his dissatisfaction: He started a campaign to raise $1 billion in voluntary funding for the wall, using “crowdfunding” site GoFundMe. As of Dec. 23, the campaign had raised more than $16 million.

Personally, I consider the border wall one of the dumbest and most evil ideas since disco, but I applaud Kolfage’s initiative. I think he’s on the right track when it comes to funding government generally.

I see two big problems with this particular campaign.

One problem is technical: Apart from a few discrete areas like gifts to pay down the national debt, the executive branch can only spend money appropriated by Congress for specific purposes. A group of us can’t just decide we want a war with Pitcairn Island, write the president a check and expect him send forth a carrier strike group or launch some Tomahawks. Or at least it’s not supposed to work that way (it does for Raytheon and Lockheed Martin).

A second problem is moral: Much of the land on which the border wall would be built is owned by people (that is, it’s not “government property”). That land would have to be bought, and some owners don’t want to sell. Which means it would have to be stolen through the process of “eminent domain.” On that end, this effort is like crowdfunding a bank robbery spree.

But I still like the general principle. It reminds me of an old antiwar saying along the lines of how beautiful it would be if the Air Force had to hold a bake sale every time it wanted to buy a new bomber.

If instead of collecting taxes, Congress simply approved project goals and appropriated “as much money as is voluntarily donated toward” those goals, it would constitute a giant step toward a free society.

Instead of an Internal Revenue Service, the federal government could contract with GoFundMe to set up and operate GoFund.gov.

It will never happen because too many people are too intent on taking other people’s money for their pet projects. But it’s a beautiful dream, isn’t it?

The USA is a bankrupt warmongering police state.

The US is no longer a democracy. The government is no longer legitimate.

The government has unconstitutionally banned protesting, arrested reporters, outlawed guns, has forfeiture, checkpoints, torture, NSA wiretapping, indefinite detention without trials, TSA groping, and extrajudical assassination.

You cannot sue the government because the courts won't hear the case or will side with the government and uphold the law.

Now Americans live in a police state. The elites have won everything. Are Americans just supposed to wait to go to the concentration camps?

Will the tyranny stop increasing, will the wars be ended, and will the debt be reduced?

What kind of life is this? Is slavery better than death?

The elites do not need to pay a price?

Everyone is born for reason.

Should Americans do nothing?

Should Americans protest like Gandhi?

What happened to Mussolini, King Charles I, Gaddafi, and Ceausescu?

Aren't you just a little bothered? Are you having trouble sleeping? Aren't you just a little concerned?

Wow.

Everything is fake and a lie today.

Americans must do mental gymnastics to justify their lives.

The US is collapsing. The world has turned upside down.

Americans used to love freedom and fight Nazis and Commies, but have now become Nazis and Commies.

The elites are importing vastly different Muslims and Mexicans while telling the feminists, homosexuals, blacks, and whites to be a big, happy family.

One problem with a diversity is that you end up with a police state because diverse countries must keep the peace by banning everything. The USA didn't use to need to ban hookah bars because Americans don't go to hookah bars. The US didn't use to need to outlaw flying lanterns because Americans don't use flying lanterns. The US didn't use to need to ban eating dog meat because Americans don't eat dogs. The US didn't use to need to ban female circumcision because Americans don't circumcise girls. Americans didn't use to need to outlaw hijabs because Americans don't wear hjabs.

Americans cannot see hypocrisy, are completely ignorant of history, and don't realize the effects of unintended consequences and decrees.

There was a time when there were no passports or driver licenses and people survived just fine.

Driver licenses used to have just a name, but then birthdates, gender, and photos were required.

Now fingerprints are needed to get a license.

One problem with outlawing everything is that you must have so many loopholes to live that tyranny becomes useless and makes the laws pointless and ineffective.

Licenses now can list any age, race, or gender you want. You can be any religion you want.

Americans say that they live in a free, peaceful country with a balanced budget, but anyone who offers opposing evidence is called a racist and a nutjob and gets banned, gets an IRS audit, is arrested, or killed.

When the US Ponzi economy implodes, Americans might kill each other with a Civil war among Fascists and Communists or unite against the 1% or start a race war.

The elites have turned everyone into criminals, liars, hypocrites, and cowards. The only good thing about living in a police state is that no one can take the moral high ground on anything.

Maybe the best Americans can do right now is become anonymous, buy a sailboat, and leave.

Everywhere one looks these days, the world seems to be moving away from debate on contentious subjects and toward demands that those who have unpopular opinions — or even just ask impertinent questions — be forcibly silenced.

“You will never hear me mention his name,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said of Brenton Tarrant, the sole suspect in two deadly attacks on mosques in Christchurch. “He may have sought notoriety but here in New Zealand we will give him nothing — not even his name.”

That’s fine as a personal decision, I guess, but not as a top-down decision for her fellow New Zealanders. Even as Ardern spoke, police working for her government were arresting at least two people for sharing the shooter’s live-streamed video of the attacks on social media.

Across the Tasman Sea, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is calling on the governments of G20 countries to implement measures “including appropriate filtering, detecting and removing of content by actors who encourage, normalize, recruit, facilitate or commit terrorist and violent atrocities.”

Let’s be clear about what Morrison, other “world leaders,” and significant segments of activist communities and even the general public are demanding (and to a frightful degree already implementing): Internet censorship.

This isn’t really a new development. The mosque attacks are merely the latest incident weaponized by politicians and activists in service to a long-running campaign against public discussion and debate that requires them to make arguments and persuade instead of just bark orders and compel.

The fictional “memory hole” of the IngSoc regime in George Orwell’s 1984 stood for more than half a century as an oft-cited and wisely acknowledged warning. Now that hole is opening up beneath us for real and threatening to suck us down into a new Dark Age of “thoughtcrime” and “unpersons.”

The threat is content-independent. Renaming climate change skeptics “deniers” and demanding “investigations” of them, or pressuring media to ban discussions of policy on vaccines is just as evil as suing Alex Jones for promulgating bizarre theories about the Sandy Hook massacre.

The only appropriate response to “bad” speech — that is, speech one disagrees with — is “better” speech.

Attempting to shut down your opponents’ ability to participate in an argument isn’t itself a winning argument. Forbidding your opponents to speak to a problem doesn’t solve that problem.

In fact, those tactics are tantamount to admitting that your arguments are less persuasive and that your solutions can’t withstand scrutiny.

Freedom of thought and expression are primary, foundational rights. They make it possible for us to hash out issues and solve problems peaceably instead of by force. Any attempt to suppress them is itself a call for totalitarianism and the alternative to those liberties is social and political death.
