My favorite part of Bakunin’s work is his emphasis on individual freedom and his critique of the state and organized religion. He believed that all forms of collective organization and control over individuals, whether it be through a state apparatus or through the church, is ultimately oppressive and should be abolished. As he famously said, “The passion for destruction is also a creative passion.”
