chemistry question

what happens to water if you run an electric current through it? is there any chemical change or does this only occur if some type of salt is dissolved in it?
i saw something about preventing covid by inhaling electrolyzed water and surely if that works some kind of chemical is formed that is harmful to bacteria but not overly dangerous
i just observed that putting a device that generates a mild electric shock inside my mouth causes saliva to taste terrible and i wonder why, surely some chemical reaction has to be occurring

@AlienSkyler the only thing that running current through water will do is give you hydrogen gas and oxygen gas
