Southern conservatives do not believe in mixing of the races or subsidy, but they also believe in fair play and accepting people as individuals.
Lots of other groups see the color line and decide it will lower their property values, and their thinking ends there.

having lived all over - i concur - coastal states operate on higher taxes which limits individual wealth accumulation, - the south is lower taxes which allows individual wealth accumulation
