mothballing is basically reversibly crippling a machine so it can be left alone for an extended period of time without taking notable damage, but you can invert the process when you need it again.
like putting the oil coat on the cast iron (rust blocking) before shelving it for three months.
@icedquinn I've seen the term used in fictional media before, phrases like "the project was mothballed", I think the Fox character in one of the batman movies says something like that
