I am sorry, if you do consider this question too insencitive, and I will accept if you just won't answer. (That is why I am even asking in a DM)
I personally do have a TON of problems :D Some serious and some I am opposed of ever being called a disorder. I for instance do not think autism is a disorder, when every single "simptom" of it makes me 10 times better at my job. On the other hand, there is no way I will be defending the Exploding Head Syndrome.
Do you consider transgenderism to be a disorder that would be better cured, or something that is "just a personal trait"?
@wowaname
Whenever I talk about "cure", I am not talking about any real treatment, but a hypothetical magical pill.
Real cures do always have side effects and most of the time do not even solve the problem.
But I just was asking, because if someone did offer me a "magical cure" for autism, I would still not take it. NO WAY!!!
im critical about the idea of mental disorders in general, i feel like the concept is helpful not for the individual, but for societies to blame certain issues on individuals. im not saying that this is 100% the case, but shit like add and anxiety are likelier to be responses to environment rather than issues with oneself, things such as schizophrenia are poorly handled in western society, et cetera
there are definitely internal factors at play for some things, but overall i dont trust psychiatrical bias to swing in the direction of "the person must be disordered, not the society", but i understand why that bias is in place: mostly profit and power. i just wish things were evaluated on a per-case basis rather than having these woefully inaccurate categorisations of "disorders" that "we don't know the cause of or how to prevent". fuck off, its the 21st century, if some of this shit was legitimately an issue with the mind, we would know by now
gender identity in specific: i really dont have a clear answer for you at least for now. it definitely isnt new, it has been a component in various ancient civilisations, and im sure it has a few possible causes. i dont know what you mean by "treat"; but if the symptoms are a result of harmful environment (either behaviourally, genetically, or chemically) then yes, i believe it's correct to address those factors. i'm not going to advocate for "conversion therapy" though, it doesnt work and its another example of a power-grab
