I am so pissed at NASA.
I get it that creating a human colony is a herculean feat, but we already do know what plants could live on mars as well as how to get there.
All it would take to make life itself multi-planetary would be 1 rocket.
Yet, instead of doing this one simple thing, NASA is doing everything it can to "NOT infest" other planets with our liveforms... ![]()
@LukeAlmighty So the idea is not to not infest other planets with our life, although I am sure for some delusional maniacs this is there, but that supposing life exists there and we have not found it, it would be a loss to science and destruction of a habitat if we contaminate it without discovering it.
Also plants cannot grow on Mars, not outside, not in the soil.
@nerdman @fm
I am not talking about terraforming.
That would be ridiculously hard. What I am talking about is identifying one or more organizms that could prosper on other planets and just send it there to spread.
That way, even if every single cell on earth died off for "any reason", the life itself could evolve again in a few million years.
Terraforming would be nice of course, but it's pointless to talk about that with our current technologies.
@LukeAlmighty @nerdman Teraforming mars is impossible, unfortunately. Pop-sci won’t say it because they sell fantasy, but the mass of mars is such that with its gravity, even with an atmosphere density as high as you can get with that gravity, even with 100% oxygen, humans (and other land animals) would not get enough oxygen to stay alive. You are going to have to pressurize a ceiling around the whole planet, which, at that point, why not just live inside? You can make very big “outdoor” contained, pressurized areas, but you cannot teraform that particular planet unfortunately.
Infest Mars like CA had decriminalized non-consensual transmission of AIDS.
