⚠️ Hi fediverse, I need advice ⚠️

I am 25, and I have been working for only an year.
I have noticed that a lot of people in company I am working at are spending a lot of time thinking about their "carier progression". It seems seriously almost inconsievable to me.
I came from a poor background, and I was always told, that job has to keep you alive and not to ruin my life. So, when I have an easy job that pays A TON, I have to wander, why do these people keep talking about "progression". I am learning more every single day, so the progression seems almost inevitable.

Am I missing something, or could this be caused simply by the fact, that I am in the engineering part of company, where merit is still more important then politics? Or is this just my libertarian meritocratic bias, and I am stupid for not thinking about "progression" constantly?

(immage as a bait so people don't skip this)

@LukeAlmighty Being an employee is being a student. You have to learn how companies work and become experienced enough to form your own company.

@Mac_CZ
Thanks, but although I do agree that making alternative sources of income is great, I think that response missed the point of the question.

Of course that the self employment is the supperior choice, but should I focus on individual promotions in the first 10 years of working for a company?

@LukeAlmighty Yes, that's the part of getting know, how the companies are working. You have to see as many different angles as possible.
