reportedly 5 teslas have crashed in this same area because the “autopilot” can’t negotiate the curve

it’s hard to overstate what a bad idea a car autopilot is

in an airplane there’s generally nothing around you for thousands of feet so if the autopilot kicks off you have plenty of time to do something about it

in a car you’re very often a fraction of a second from hitting something at high speed, so by the time you register that you need to do something to fix the autopilot’s fuckup it’s too late

I do see why the self driving cars need a ton of work, but I do not see, why is it a "bad idea", considering, that computers do cut so many human problems out of the equasion.

@LukeAlmighty The problem is what I just said, when the autopilot fails there’s very little time for a human to do anything about it. There is no possibility whatsoever that car autopilots will ever be so robust that they never run into a situation they can’t handle. Even if the logic is perfect, which it won’t be, electronics fail all the time. You’ll be driving around in a 3 ton aluminum turd that can have a stroke at any moment. It’s like giving everybody an 80 year old chauffeur with high blood pressure.

@deprecated
Every single line you wrote aplies to humans as well. I guess I just believe, that computers can get to the point, when they are *better then humans. Wanting perfection in an inperfect world is a dumb goal. No matter if you want it from computers or humans.

@LukeAlmighty I’ve been driving for almost 20 years and I’ve never hit anything. Never caused an accident. A computer can’t do better than that.

If you want to trade away your own abilities to take your chances with your computer driver, that’s your choice. I don’t, and I’m not interested in being forced to, which is where this is heading. They’re not saying it as much anymore but back in 2015 that was the big sales pitch.

@deprecated @LukeAlmighty I could see it getting phased in for shit drivers. Get in a couple accidents and get an ultimatum from your insurance company - $500 per month or let the computer drive for you.

@InceptionState @LukeAlmighty It’s occurred to me that they would do that. But that’s just another slippery slope, and as we’ve seen, the slippery slope is more of a rule than a fallacy.

@deprecated @InceptionState
Slippery slope is a law of phisics.
Only a true idiot can believe it's a fallacy.

@LukeAlmighty @deprecated We have a long history of forcing use of safety features in cars through mandatory regulation - seat belts, air bags, interlock for DUI drivers, child car seats, etc. Don't see why we'd expect this to be any different, it's just a question of how long it takes for the tech to become mature.

@deprecated
Yeah, being forced changes everything. That is a constant pain.

No, you do not need a google/apple smartphone. It woudn'tbe legal to ask for that. We will just throw you in jail if you don't have an app with wax certificate, that works only on these 2 devices...

@deprecated @LukeAlmighty the problem is that roads in general are complete shitshow. Why is there random big rocks off road on a fork? instead of proper barrier? This shit is never going to go well with an autopilot

@coolboymew @deprecated
Ok, I think I get your point...

Forrest roads will take decades till PCs cas see them properly.

@LukeAlmighty @deprecated pretty much

And honestly, that road is already asking for accident to happens normally, so

I've been driving for over 20 years. I have driven a few hundred thousand miles.
I have caused two accidents (nobody has been injured in these), been rear ended four times (yes, people were injured in one), and killed four very stupid birds. I've been hit by random animals who charged into the side of my car multiple times on country roads.

There are a certain number of road types I'd trust self-driving on. But that is almost exclusively interstate highways, and only if there's no construction going on or winter weather.

For clarification, the two accidents I caused involved only my own car. One involved a cramped parking garage, where I cut too early and my car hit a concrete column by swinging the side of the frontend into it while in reverse, one involved an electrical system failure at night which put me off the road at high speed. One is my fault for maintenance reasons (I could make excuses as to why it wasn't my fault but I'll choose not to, since I owned the car by then and bear ultimate responsibility for its safety at that point), the other was just straight up my fault, and was at such a low speed that the only harm was to my own property. Yes, a car packed with sensors would never have had that problem.

@LukeAlmighty
@LukeAlmighty @deprecated number one problem is going to be it heard you say nigger and now it's taking you to the Amazog Police Station, door locks already engaged.
@LukeAlmighty @deprecated A job at Walmart will cure that outlook. Every time something new is deligated to a system automatically doing it, or there's an updated UI on the scanners, everything gets worse. And the worst part is corporate keeps track of how much we obey the system and demands complete subservience to every wrong pick, so inventory is screwed no matter what.

Translate this to cars, and insurance companies bill you extra for steering away from the boulder, and your car starts lying to you about whether it's running out of gas. Consumer cars have peaked and aren't coming back.
