@alex @snow FWIW I much prefer being able to view profiles without logging in, and due to the nature of the Fediverse I think that should be the default functionality if it's optional.

I have my own instance; pretty much everyone I interact with is not on my instance. It's nice to be able to look at profiles I don't follow to see if I want to follow them.

@robby @snow I think part of the problem with social media is already too much information in the first place. I treat my profile like a journal. Top level posts are the high quality ones. Apart from being mostly noise, replies are not a healthy thing to be reading a lot of. Social media is a drug, and as your doctor I’m recommending people don’t read replies. But the addicts are begging me to make it configurable.

That’s an interesting point, I agree completely. Is it better to be the methadone to facebook/twitter et al’s heroin, or to be genuine sobriety? It’s something I’ve thought quite a bit about and I frankly don’t know.

@ademan @robby @snow People use social media because it provides genuine value to our lives. It allows us to make valuable connections with anyone in the world. I would just recommend practicing good hygiene. When you’re about to drop something controversial, don’t sit there and wait for the notifications. Close the tab immediately and don’t come back until hours later. Same if you’re going to message someone and you feel anxious about their reply. Just close the damn tab and return later. If you can’t stop checking it, log out. Most drugs can be used productively, but you have to master them.
