As a star wars fan:
The "Republic" allowed slavery all over the galaxy
Weren't willing to stop drug cartels, bounty hunters etc.
Had a huge Spice and Death stick problem (drugs)
Were regulating entire planetary systems into powerty
Had a cast of elite supersoldiers who were abowe ANY LAW
I know Jeneva convention doesn't exist in Star wars, but shere number of violations is more then telling of how moral they are.
Had cloned an army of slaves who were bred to die for rights they were never ment to enjoy.

In fact, star wars universe is so economically fucked, that 2 most ambicious proffessions are bounty hunters and smuglers.
People do not aspire to manafacture ships to get out of powerty. That is just not possible. Nah. Once you get an old ship, your first stop is in a local drug lords cantina.
