Yeah, when I think about it, it's quite possible the scene was actually suposed to be this way.
I've seen an essay on this topic, but honestly cannot find it now. But when you write a joke into a script, it is ridiculously simple to do all the staps exactly as they were written, and still miss the point of the scene completelly. (there was an example of random guy with leaf blower in airline commercial)
