Something that wouldn't exist, or wouldn't be prominent enough to get its own word in other times. The whole 50 words for snow thing. (to head off the inevitable counterargument to this, it WAS much fewer than they say, and DID actually sometimes have equivalent terms in english, "sleet" "snowdrifts" "snow banks" "flurries" etc but the point remains there were technical cases where the terms for snow were useful to them)

That’s not quite the same thing. One is reminding you that they are smart, they other is trying to convince you that they are. Which it is depends on whether they can, in plain language, correctly explain the meaning of the words they just used. The ones faking it can’t.
Lol it’s a common thing smart people do because they know they’re perceived as being smart and try to maintain that image by sprinkling a few grandiloquisms or unapproachable jargon in ordinary conversation. It’s a thing regardless of your politics.
