They really get pissy about not being given brand new rugs from the sound of it. They’re complaining that “you can’t teach elementary without RUGS! And they’re like $400 a piece!”

…..women

@WashedOutGundamPilot It is kind of messed up that teachers are expected to buy a lot of their own supplies from supply catalogs out of pocket with no reimbursement, while the state uses taxpayer funds to buy shit like ipads.

@kazcynski_stan They kinda aren’t though. Most of the ones I’ve seen are teachers playing this game where they always want more weird, cutesy projects and one-off supplies for a single activity. They’re mostly ladies, so they’re easy prey to seeing someone find a new cute shiny and freaking out about how they have to get it.

Like how they were complaining about rugs, lots of their “i HAVE to buy my own supplies” comes from the fact that they want to have the fun/quirky/cozy classroom and they whine that the budget doesn’t give them $5,000 to go to idea with their pinterest dream class list

My step sis is a kindergarten teacher, and she is EXACTLY as you have just described. It is in her nature to run after the shiniest new thing.

Yeah... and all she talks about is her art projects.

@LukeAlmighty @kazcynski_stan When we all hear “the district won’t buy any supplies!!! It’s like they WANT the kids to suffer!!!!” we picture chairs, or drinking fountains, even markers.

What they mean is that the district refused to buy $2,000 worth of legos

@WashedOutGundamPilot @LukeAlmighty Have you ever wondered why even elementary schools have "back-to-school" lists?

It's because the district doesn't provide any of it, and teachers aren't obligated to purchase them.

@kazcynski_stan @LukeAlmighty Yeah, my point is that there’s a SHIT TON of waste in the system though, and it’s being solved in the stupidest way possible. Just soliciting cast-off crap at the end of the year would go far in alleviating that. I had a few just keep the end-of year leftover crap, notebooks, writing, anything from the list was there in spades. Teachers are retarded, they insist on ONLY buying new at every turn. There’re a lot more tools to address these things than they want to admit, if they were really serious about solving them they could improve the situation, but they’re small minded and insist on following the crowd and whining about the same things as everyone else.

The only places where the real barebones, no-supplies even begin to foment is probably in the districts where they get tired of replacing everything week after week. At a certain point they realize it’s dumb to stock the shelf with fresh dry erase markers since they disappear after a day.

Most of that back to school shit never got used much anyway. Seems like half the time at the year’s end I’d bemusedly note that a substantial fraction of my stuff was like-new anyways. But, the rest of the teachers give out a list, so she will too!

@WashedOutGundamPilot @LukeAlmighty Yeah I remember a lot of things on the list never being touched, seemed like it was a general thing given to every class in every grade. Like you don't really used colored markers after like 2nd grade, unless you're making posters
