What the fuck happened in 2016?

I still remember Hillary making the "bunch of deplorables" speech, and thinking that it isn't normal. Democracy relied on a moto: Let's find a compromise.

And there she was saying "Fuck these people, they aren't who I care about." openly during an election.

What did I miss?

Generally, the DNC is a coalition. The GOP not so much. Here I refer to the voters, and no so much the party insiders.

The DNC is a mishmosh of people with no real commonality, but most, if not all of whom, want to be special. And the DNC acts as if each is to get votes.

The GOP tends to have common goals.

With this in mind, I believe Hillary's intent was to rally each faction in her coalition by making each dislike the "deplorables" for each's own reasons, e.g. because they're homophobic, racist, sexist, etc.
