How do you keep on finding these amazing philosophers?

Is this sarcasm? I’ll be honest I can’t really tell.

@dave
Without sarcasm
> I think this guy is absolutely retarded, and I am still amazed you were able to find a parson with such a low intelligence.

Better?

Gotcha. So I think he’s absolutely correct, although only with a particular aspect of the “current thing” meme: People joking about how it changes.

If you look at what events “independent thinkers” always put in those memes of NPC chips getting swapped out, the things they use are events that are actually significant:

A new coronavirus that, unlike previous variants where the infected had detectable symptoms and thus could be identified and quarantined, was spreading rapidly, killing around 1% of the people it infected, and crucially made its victims infectious 1-3 days before they became symptomatic. This made it nearly impossible to contain, which stokes panic considering the estimated fatality rate (early on, it was estimated at 1-2%, which would have meant 50-100 million dead if this thing went global).

Making the panic worse, the outbreak started in China, a country that is known for trying to hide its scandals and failures, and particularly was known for already hiding the extent of another coronavirus outbreak, SARS, about 20 years ago. So you’ve got a new virus, that isn’t well understood, with the outbreak happening in a country doing media blackouts, people dying, the curve going exponential, and now cases are starting to pop up in your area. Remember the attached meme?

Secondly, Ukraine. Not gonna hit you with another wall of text but I’m sure you understand why this is also significant.

>So I think he’s absolutely correct, although only with a particular aspect of the “current thing” meme: People joking about how it changes.

The thing about the "current thing" meme is that people's opinion practically completely mirror the press presenting it pretty much instantly. I can't stress how the supposed anti-war (shit)libs instantly got on the Ukraine war bandwagon, just shortly after being told that the middle east war in the 2000s was all bullshit, pretty much immediately, so fucking fast that I actually legitimately got scared in a way

You can pretty much see it in any shitlibs from the last 5 years. Trump is a big example of it, the presidency wasn't as much awful as much the reaction around it. The press got "TDS", the shitlibs personalities got TDS and everyone else followed. And then COVID happened and you can see them following the propaganda to the letter, up to even doubting the vaccine at first because it was Trump pushed. And etc etc to today, still following the corporate press opinion to the letter
@dave @LukeAlmighty That's what is irritating. A lot of these very same people were constantly scoffing about "boomers " (before it became a thing) and Fox News (that deserved it) and now they're doing the exact same fucking shit
@LukeAlmighty @dave Like for example, Rage Against the Machine, a metal band that's are now absolute establishment boomers. Yesterday's supposed misfits are now agreeing in drove to the establishment because of a vague nebulous understanding of politics, that they're on the "left", said "left" is in power, so all's good and well when it reality we're pretty much at the same exact old shit but on a "left" (shitlib) favor this time

The real misfits still recognize this, everyone else is a fucking poser

@dave
I never go outside. I hate crowds and believe, that protests are waste of time.

TV: Teens have been protesting in the streets.

I get a call from mom: Have you been on protest?

Me: no

My mom: But the TV said that teens.... And you're a teen...

This is the level of thinking you can expect from an NPC.

You wanna know when my parents are at their most reasonable? When they become too busy to watch the damn tv.
Meanwhile my aunt is taking her 5th shot of the vaccine and talking of masks, cause the news still brings up covid.
And they even used terminology like ''reminder shot'' that was coined a year ago by NPR
it's all staged, everything

@LukeAlmighty @coolboymew @LukeAlmighty @dave the thing with the "current thing" meme is that it's not tied to to the real importance of a certain event.
it's more about the importance MSM GIVES to a certain event.
and how people change their fucking opinions so fast around whatever MSM has on the spotlight while every other event of the past gets memory-holed
The speech had been proceeding for perhaps twenty minutes when a messenger hurried on to the platform and a scrap of paper was slipped into the speaker’s hand. He unrolled and read it without pausing in his speech. Nothing altered in his voice or manner, or in the content of what he was saying, but suddenly the names were different. Without words said, a wave of understanding rippled through the crowd. Oceania was at war with Eastasia! The next moment there was a tremendous commotion. The banners and posters with which the square was decorated were all wrong! Quite half of them had the wrong faces on them. It was sabotage! The agents of Goldstein had been at work! There was a riotous interlude while posters were ripped from the walls, banners torn to shreds and trampled underfoot. The Spies performed prodigies of activity in clambering over the rooftops and cutting the streamers that fluttered from the chimneys. But within two or three minutes it was all over. The orator, still gripping the neck of the microphone, his shoulders hunched forward, his free hand clawing at the air, had gone straight on with his speech. One minute more, and the feral roars of rage were again bursting from the crowd. The Hate continued exactly as before, except that the target had been changed.

@dave
No, I do not understand.
The moment Covid was anounced with the properties you mentioned, it was obvious, that it was a global event. Inevitabely. And when I said so, literally noone around me understood.

But that was not a "current thing" thinking. On the contrary, the "it's in china, it's in ukraine, It's in here, 2 gay people were shot in a bar" kind of thinking is the current thing thinking.

So, While it may seem we agree, I am unbelievabely confused, why you would consider a global pandemic a "current thing" event.

@dave
The entire point of the meme is the total insignificance of the event mentioned.

I see people in here complaining, that 2 people were shot in a bar. That is not an event, that should have international coverage. That is a daily occurance. Only a "currect thing" thinker can make it into hes personality for a week.

@LukeAlmighty @dave

>The entire point of the meme is the total insignificance of the event mentioned.
I somewhat disagree, I think it can go both ways, the unimportant and important, it's all about falling in line in the end
@coolboymew @LukeAlmighty @dave Most people don't think about information past a very basic level. They see news and they react "I trust this" or "I don't trust this". They don't ask themselves "Why am I shown this?", "Is this a representative sample or an isolated anecdote?", "Who decided this needed my attention?", let alone more critical questions like "Does a change in coverage on a subject reflect a change in the intensity/frequency of the underlying phenomenon?" or "How would I recognize news that genuinely should get my attention from those that I'm only shown to lead me to a specific conclusion?".

@dave@gleasonator.com It was all over blown and all the videos from China were staged and leaked to scare everyone. Shut the fuck up you gullible pile of misery

@dave @LukeAlmighty Caring about or being aware of the current thing is not the same as supporting [the government's stance on] the current thing.
