I just read an article about the history of joining the EU.
The first thing the article said was something along the lines of "no one could have predicted what the EC would become fifty years later".
However after reading the article then it's quite evident that every single time there was a debate on the topic of "EC/EU; yes or no", the "no" side has been very close to 100% correct in their predictions of what would eventually happen.
