Was it gain of function with intent to infect the public and profit off of a vaccine produced for it


Or gain of function to produce a vaccine that could help prevent future natural mutations

It's kinda hard to know, the latter is a good thing - albeit such research must be conducted with extreme safety

The latter is exactly as bad, because an already existing virus is just one (bad day, tired janitor, greedy executive, earthquake etc) away from being in the public anyway.
