Games have nothing tangible to offer other than the satisfaction of gameplay.
So games "reward" system is infact more gameplay.
The real question of what this tweet is asking if why do gamers try hard in some cases but not in others? Because tolerance. Fiction has suspension of disbelief,. Game difficulty has level of tolerance.
Like suspension of disbelief difficulty tolerance is reliant on the persons ability to tolerate what's being presented. Which is why some fiction is extreme fantasy settings retain suspension of disbelief while realistic fiction settings may be hard to suspend disbelief. Game difficulty tolerance requires you to at some level enjoy what you're doing and understand what you're doing. Some game may have lower tolerance just because of circumstances related to what you're playing. More people may be willing to go though dark souls difficulty just because it is dark souls and known for being difficult

Also: sneaking is about waiting and observing. Waiting is the ultimate punishment. (games don't usually cause pain :D)
So, failing in dark souls gave you 20 examples of a good dodge, 5 examples of a mis-read enemy, some move patterns... All rewarding. For a price of a 3 min fight.
Stealth game gives you...... info that waiting 55s was not enough.
