1) The point is simply to not lose family photos. But a home server is something I have been considering for quite a while. Even if run from an RPy.

2) The budget is mostly open... But I also hate most comertial solutions for obvious reasons :D

So, as long as I pay for HW, but not for SW with my soul, it should be ok.
