I know "sub" comes from "subtitled". But where does "dub" come from :thinkAkko:
@igeljaeger it's literally just "dub" which mean to do a voiceover
@hj such a short word kinda needs some history to it to make sense

@igeljaeger
The etymology seems to come from "double", because it involves making an additional recording and adding it to an original. The word got abbreviated down to "dub" over the years since its original usage in the 1930s.
@hj

@JapanAnon @hj still kind of weird when you consider that the word synchronize exists in english
@igeljaeger @JapanAnon it's just what's simpler to say and what stuck. Russians call copy machines a "xerox" to this day.
@hj @igeljaeger @JapanAnon wait people in the west dont call photocopying and photocopiers xero?
@xeno @hj @JapanAnon theyre caleld printers, and drucker and whatever french people use. pintéroulous probably
@igeljaeger @JapanAnon @hj literally photocopiers like i said though because not all printers scan?
@igeljaeger @hj @JapanAnon apparently german doesnt have a word for a frickin xero and they just call it different words based on what its doing at the moment
@xeno @JapanAnon @hj yeah, I say scanner when I gotta scan something. And Drucker when I gotta druck.
@igeljaeger @JapanAnon @hj not having a word for a machine that is both a scanner and a printer doesnt sound simple to me, this is pretty convoluted
@xeno @igeljaeger @JapanAnon ÐФУ, which is literally "Multi-functional device" is what we call those
Follow

@igeljaeger @xeno @JapanAnon @hj Every word in german is too long. You don't need to concatenate everything, you know!
