Yeah, mstdn.jp blocked smug...

I can't follow what my Japanese friends are saying anymore :saddest:
It's shit like this is why I hate the fediverse.

You idiots can't accept the fact that when I say I want to discourage blocks it's because I don't want an antisocial network.

I didn't even realize any blocks occured.

@zemichi I'm fine with blocks, but not at the inter-instance level. Blocks should be up to the user. Instances can have a block recommendation list, but it should be up to the individual at the end of the day.

@VD15 this is why centralized services are good. You are not forced to not associate with people.

Yeah I said it. Centralized services are good fite me nerds. :backfromgab:

@zemichi I don't think I follow... What if said centralized service yeets somebody they don't like out of existence, isn't that in effect forcing people to not associate with someone?

@VD15 I make a new account on an centralized service, I have access to all the users of that network unless they have locked accounts, my only catch is I am under the admins rules and decisions.

I make a new account on fedi and I am already locked out of thousands of users despite permissions.

I view it as a freedom for all vs personal freedom argument. Both are correct but my personal problem with it is when I first joined up I have seen fedi evolve from a freedom for all users standpoint to Instance freedom for admins. People view fedi as a freedom from the centralized services they come from not realizing the limitations imposed onto everyone.

Not that it should be changed, but it should be discouraged. Instance blocking is a negative to users. It is removing freedom from users to give freedom to a small number of individuals.

@zemichi I guess that it can still be viewed as a personal freedom thing. Instances have their block lists public most of the time, so I think signing up to an instance is equivalent to opting-in to the block, though I think there should be the option to opt-out of it too if there's the occasional ban they dislike.

A lot pf people came to fedi because they wanted a padded cell, that's what they opted into. As dumb of a decision I think it is, they should be free to make it. Chances are the kind of people you're complaining about not being able to reach are the kind of people who would've given you the Steve Shives treatment if instance blocking wasn't a thing. I just kind of accept it.

Mainly gaming/nerd instance for people who value free speech. Everyone is welcome.
