I don't see it like that necessarily. I don't think of my parents of being communists, even if they lived through that time. I view an old german as nazi if they did things like actively spread the propaganda of their own will, or if they had some higher position in the military or SS (basically weren't just soldiers that had to follow orders).

Sure, any regime is going to be different to one another. But don't be fooled in thinking people didn't rat each other out over here too, and got people in political jail or worse. All totalitarian regimes are shitty. At a certain point, arguing over small details of degrees of shittiness is useless.
