If it was true and he deleted it, it will be because of the backlash. Look for the remaining backlash to verify that the tweet existed.

If I had a twitter account I probably would have gone and checked for myself, but since I don't (and don't care that much tbh) I'm just letting you know how you could check if the tweet was likely true or not.
