I've been using KDE for 2-3 years now. I was initially prepared to sacrifice some speed & resources in favor of having an environment in which I would feel more comfortable coming from Windows. But it turned out it didn't feel laggy or anything like that. And while I did have some problems with glitches for a while, I think it might have been mostly because of a failing GPU.

I used xfce for a while too. But I really felt like I needed the Windows style icon taskbar manager thing. Otherwise, it was a good desktop experience too.
I like to mess with things but not have to mess with things.
xfce is good like that, I don't really have the time or patience to set up something like openbox or i3.

I've only seen openbox in some liveusb stuff. Don't have enough experience with it really, but while I'm sure it's lightweight and fast, it also looks like complete, unusable bs imo.
As for tiling desktops, that's just something people use for bragging rights as far as I can tell. Unless you're a robot that does only 2-3 things on their system, I don't see how it could make things easier or better in any way.
That was a thing for the longest time when Linux was starting to become widespread. People would rick their desktops to look super 1337 at the expense of having a functional work station.

Yeah, I still caught the days of compiz on Ubuntu. It looked nice, but it was too much.
Of course I was just happy when it got to the point where a linux install wasn't an all day process.
Im happy with it though, I can see myself using it going forward.
