I honestly don't know. I found it just as weird. I guess for reading at night, if you find the backlight too strong or something. But considering how well you can fine tune it, from 1% to 100%, I really don't see why you'd need it.

Maybe it works well if you need a strong contrast, which would force you to up the brightness to it's max, but you also don't want that much light to shine from it.
