The purpose of surgical masks is not to protect yourself from viruses, the purpose is that if you got it without knowing (or maybe if you're asymptomatic) you're less likely to spread it to others if you wear the mask. Surgical masks protect you indirectly by means of everyone around you wearing one.
If you want to protect yourself directly, you need at least an N95 mask or better.

Wearing the mask doesn't mean you're doing it specifically because some other moron is forcing you to. You're still wearing it cause you're a decent human being and don't want to endanger the lives of others.

As long as I still have family members and other acquaintances who are vulnerable, for one reason or another, yeah I'm gonna be plenty worried. And even when it comes to people who I'm quite confident would endure it just fine, I still would rather not spread it to them either if I can help it.
