No, I think mine makes more sense. The more people kill themselves, the more the survivors will want to fund research to discover why people become unhappy and to fund research into new ways of making people happy.
Basically the survivors are scarred shitless that one day they'll end up depressed and suicidal and want to find ways to stop that from happening.

People want to save their own asses. If they start thinking that suicide is like some disease that might come for them one day, they'll gonna want to find a way to stop it from ever happening to them. First step in finding a solution to a problem is research.
