@alyx An "automatic pistol" is a proper name of any magazine fed pistol that is not manually operated like a Semmerling. In addition, that article is in Romanian, where names can be completely different. Some people started adding "semi-" to it in recent years, out of analogy with rifles and shotguns. IMHO it's a dubious linguistical innovation, which in any case does not do anything to make "automatic" improper when applied to pistols.
@alyx @Awoo Again in recent decades in the U.S., more autistic authors and those working for the government started to move away from "automatic", although not because of itself, but because they wanted to disambiguate "pistol". So, they started to use "handgun" to mean "a generic pistol", "pistol" to mean "automatic", and "revolver" remained as it was, only now it's a type of handgun instead of a type of pistol. This does not necessarily apply to Romania though. In fact, they may be using a completely different taxonomy. For example, Russians use the word "avtomat" to denote a class of weapons that encompasses both larger submachine guns and assault rifles. In the same time, they also have a proper name for submachine guns, "pistolet-pulemyot", which overlaps with "avtomat" but only applies to pistol caliber weapons.... including pistols capable of fully automatic fire (such as Stechkin). In short, without knowing Romanian terms, I cannot draw any conclusions about the headline we're supposed to be mocking.

I'm Romanian. We say that the firing is performed manually. (as can be seen in the Romanian wiki page for a Romanian pistol).

You can say that the reloading is "automatic", but only the reloading. Putting a blanket "the gun is automatic" label gives it a completely different meaning, seeing as people are obviously more concerned about the firing part.

@alyx Thanks for the confirmation! Would not be the first time for journalists to use tricks in order to make guns seem more menacing. @Awoo
