If you ever feel like a failure just remember that The Shining and The Thing received mixed and very negative reviews respectively from critics when they were released
In fact, both were nominated for Razzies. The Thing for worst score (by Ennio Morricone!!!) and The Shining for WORST DIRECTOR. Stanley Kubrick as worst director. I think the people in the 80s might have suffered from some kind of mass retardation

Personally I haven't seen either of those, so it's hard to comment, but I'm guessing that in the case of The Shining it was because of snobs that have read the book and were dissatisfied that it wasn't a faithful reproduction.
I'm seeing some of this today with MCU movies. For example, people that were really invested in Spider Man as he is portrayed in the comics weren't massive fans of the MCU Spider Man movies, while people that weren't familiar with the comics seemed to enjoy them much more.

@alyx highly highly recommend both movies, not only some of the best horror movies ever but imo some of the best movies period
