From my understanding, Jesus' sacrifice was more to absolve humanity of the initial sin of Adam and Eve, and basically a ticket for god to allow you to apologize for your own sins.
But I'm not religious anymore, so I don't care that much about the minutiae anymore.

This act also removed the old testament need for sacrifices of cattle, crops and blood. He changed the rules. At least that's what they taught the people at the church I went to.
