ah. looks like when the tablet goes in to "doze mode" it borks the tap unlock and Automator's ability to bop the screen open with a wake lock.

Normally you should be able to add Automator to "battery optimization" exceptions, but I wouldn't be surprised if it borks actually respecting that.
@alyx it's set as "not optimized" but yeah. there is an option to have it break doze (within automator) but this requires root. which apparently doesn't come automatically when you install lineage

No, root isn't an automatic on Lineage. Get Magisk. If you have enough control of your device to install Lineage, you can root it with Magisk.
@alyx i wouldn't have bought the tablet if it wasn't already on the rootable + lineage list
