@kenshinfo from what i heard from coffee geeks, it's actually one of the best things to solve the keep coffee warm problem. but it could function without the app entirely as a stand-alone device with a temperature control. it's an app because they want your data and to lock you in.

There has to be some amount of bullshit involved. There's no way a cup like that actually has enough guts in it to warm up the coffee. You need a resistor, your IoT circuitry and a power source. And the power source is the biggest problem. Unless you expect to recharge it every 5 minutes, you're gonna need a chunky battery in there.

@alyx @kenshinfo it's not really intended to warm up coffee, it's intended to hold hot coffee at a drinkable temperature.

it lists a 1 hour run time on one charge, which is pretty bad in terms of chargeable devices.

it cheats because it's "coaster" is a wireless charger.
@alyx @kenshinfo actually it's not listed as wireless, so it's quite possible there are just contacts on the base that keep it charging when in the "coaster"

I was expecting they'd be cheating with some kind of coaster/dock that is delivering the power.

@grey @kenshinfo
I would have done it with inductive heating instead. That way you can basically completely remove the power source from the cup. You keep most of the IoT circuitry in the coaster,.As for the temperature sensor in the cup you can either have it work only while near the magnetic field, or have a very small battery just for it.

This would also make it more energy efficient than using restive heating, you get rid of the heavy battery that is a fire hazard if you ever drop the cup. Since you're already expected to constantly use it's coaster, it doesn't change much in that aspect. If something happens to the coaster, it's much easier to replace that than the battery inside the cup. Much more environmentally friendly.
