Well my landlord came by with the Orkin man and I asked her about the pet deposit.
(Cornbread was locked in my room and luckily kept quiet)

She said that before I get the animal I need to pay the deposit and provide records that it's up to date on all of its shots. Also there are weight limits. I said it's a cat so weight limits shouldn't be an issue. Then she said, "Oh then it needs to be declawed or defanged or whatever it is you do to cats. I don't really know what all is in the policy. I'll get you a copy of the policy."

That has me worried. I hope she's just mistaken about that but if cats are required to be declawed then I'm definitely going to challenge that. Shouldn't be hard to get a note from the doctor that says that's actually animal abuse. Especially since even the humane society and ASPCA say so as well.

Gonna have to call the vet to get a quote for how much all of this will cost.

Still, I can't imagine the policy requires cats to be declawed. That'd just be bonkers.

@sjw declawing is illegal where i live, unless absolutely medically necessary, and with good reason. definitely challenge it

And it's also beyond cruel. The landlord should go fuck himself for demanding something like that.
Also, this is the first time I've ever heard of defanging for a cat (or a pet in general). There has to be some kind of mistake there, as I simply don't see how a cat's bite could constitute a serious enough issue to where you need to eliminate it's most important teeth.

@alyx @sjw yeah plus as far as i'm aware cat teeth don't generally damage property (tbh neither do nails if a cat is well-trained, especially with a scratching post), perhaps unless your cat is reeeally poorly-behaved... but for instance my cat (now since dearly departed) never even chewed on wires because he wasn't interested, he only ever chewed on toys or food. not even something we taught him, he just legit didn't care
@alyx @lottev to be fair if that is the policy (haven't read it yet) she didn't make it.
